I really dig what each drummer we mention [that we all dig] brings to the table...

You know what would be good battle and a good promotion for Gretsch drums (not that they need it or deserve it); bring back the old Gretsch Drum Night. Get the current roster of Gretsch jazz drummers just like they did it before w/Papa Jo, Philly Joe, Blakey, and Elvin and record it and put it out on a cd or DVD. Does anyone have that cd?
Have it at the new or newish Birdland and get Vinnie, Bill Stewart, Cindy Blackman, and Joe LaBarbera. Have them all play in different situations, piano trio, quartet, big band, funk arrangement of a standard, etc. At the end have just the drummers play a few choruses of a 32 bar tune-one for the head, two solo choruses for each drummer, and then trade 8's, and 4's and then one more for the head. Tape it or record it and sell it through Hudson or somebody interested.
Make a commemorative Gretsch Drum Night 2004 drumkit in Cadillac Green w/gold hardware for them to play on and maybe make 100 of them to sell.
what about Vinnie(circa 1982) vs. Vinnie (circa 1989) vs. Vinnie (circa 2003) who would win??

Face it, we?re all technique freaks in HOD, I don?t see anyone genuflecting to the temple of Ringo here. We?re drummers who like players who can play.
My abiding admiration for the drumming skills of the greats is exactly like everyone else?s here, as is my excitement when drummers like Weckl, Colaiuta and Phillips give me a ?view from the top.? Simon puts his whole body into his playing and Vinnie?s got those over-conditioned hands. I don?t use traditional grip (much) and that?s why Simon?s style so appeals to me. Pocket furnished me with a Louie Bellson video where Louie?s hands were just beautiful as they executed all those military grip chops. Vinnie?s hands are like that as are a certain Steve ?Blush Dah? Holmes?s. This kills me to see and hear and, as a technique freak, I dig that kind of approach. I also like the more visceral, but technically correct, execution of drummers like Simon, and John Henry Bonham.
That being said, I think I?d like to see Bozzio and Phillips battle to exhaustion.
